Citizens Police Academy
Wheeling Citizens Police Academy
The Wheeling Police Department is now accepting applications for the Citizen's Police Academy, scheduled to run from September 23 through November 18. These free classes, taught by Officers and Staff will meet one night a week from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and will cover just about everything of interest concerning Law Enforcement in Wheeling.
Instruction will take place in the Wheeling Police Department at 1 Community Boulevard, Wheeling Illinois.
Purpose of the Academy
The Academy is designed to increase understanding between citizens and the police through education. Our intent is to acquaint citizens with law enforcement's role in the criminal justice system, and to provide increased understanding of the tasks police officers face in their daily work.
With better understanding, it becomes easier for police and citizens to find realistic solutions to neighborhood problems.
The instructors are officers and personnel from the Department who teach their own areas of expertise. Each has years of training and experience in the subject.
The initial session will include an introduction, an orientation and presentation on the history and organization of the Wheeling Police Department. In the weeks that follow, topics will include information on specific department units, including Patrol, Traffic, Crime Prevention/Community Relations, Forensic Evidence, Communications and Investigations. Law enforcement issues that will be discussed include domestic violence, child abuse, use of force, criminal law, major crimes and community policing. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a police firing range exercise and there will be a demonstration by the Wheeling Police Department Canine Unit.
Upon completion of the program, students will have the option to ride along with a patrol officer to see first-hand what officers see and hear, and what they are trained to do under a variety of circumstances. Graduates also have the opportunity to join the Wheeling Police Department's Citizens Patrol. (More information can be found here: Citizens-on-Patrol)
Throughout the experience, participants are encouraged to ask questions and discuss topics with department personnel.
