The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) is a unit of local government and a not-for-profit corporation.  Twenty-three towns in northern Cook County joined together to form SWANCC in 1988.  SWANCC developed a long-term plan to manage the region’s garbage that was adopted by its Board of Directors in 1991.  Since then, SWANCC has been at work implementing this balanced and environmentally safe solution to the region’s garbage challenge.

As of August 23, 2004 SWANCC has moved to:

             2700 Patriot Boulevard, Suite 110
             Glenview, IL 60026

              New Phone Number: (847) 724-9205
              Fax: (847) 724-9605

Waste Management delivers all of the Village’s refuse to the SWANCC transfer station located in Des Plaines.  A fee for this function is collected by Waste Management, and is included on your Waste Management bill.  The fee is transmitted to the Village, and then to SWANCC.  All residential units are also assessed a fee through the water bill for the fixed costs of the SWANCC facilities.

SWANCC is cooperating with Curbside, Inc. to give residents the opportunity to pay collection of HHW directly from their homes.  Residents will be able to avoid long lines at collection events by scheduling a pick-up of the HHW material with Curbside, Inc. The cost for a normal pick-up is between $95 and $125 depending on the types of materials the resident is having collected.  Excessive materials will incur additional charges.  Payment is made directly by the resident to Curbside, Inc.  To use this service, follow these steps:

  1)  Call the HHW Hotline (800) 449-7587  to request a
       collection.

When a resident calls the Household Hazardous
Waste Hotline (800) 449-7587, several questions are
asked including the caller's address, and type and amount
materials they have for collection.  Payment arrangements,
either through a credit card or by check, are made at this
        time.

  2)  A collection date is scheduled and an HHW Kit is
       shipped:

A pick-up date is scheduled over the phone based on the
next available collection day.  There is usually at least one
collection per month depending on the number of calls for
the service.  The program is fully explained and safety
procedures are reviewed.  An HHW kit is shipped to the
resident's home prior to the collection date.  The Kit can
hold up to 75 pounds of HHW securely inside.  Instructions
are included in the kit describing how to load your waste in
       the kit.

  3)  HHW material is collected from the residence:

On the scheduled date, Curbside, Inc. will collect the
eligible HHW materials directly from the resident's home.

Illinois EPA's Household Hazardous Waste Program is a widely accepted and acclaimed system that works with local governments to divert residential waste materials with hazardous characteristics out of local solid waste landfills.  The demand for this service far exceeds state resources available to deal with the wastes.  A number of cost-containment features have been implemented over the years to increase efficiency, but demand continues to accelerate.  Click here to visit the SWANCC website and learn more about HHW local and regional collection events around the state.
