Recycling Service

There is a SHARPS / Medicine safe disposal event  scheduled the third Saturday of every month from  10am to Noon at the Fire Department, 255 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling, IL.  

Wheeling residents may bring unwanted/outdated prescriptions and over-the-counter  medications as well as sharps (medical needles and syringes) to the Fire Department for safe disposal.  These items will be collected in a drive-thru process to the collection point behind the Fire Department (east side of Village Hall).

In order for the items to be accepted for collection certain conditions apply:

  • All pharmaceuticals must be kept in their original containers.  Loose pharmaceuticals WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. For prescription medications, the label must be readable.  Use a marker to cross out any personal information.

  • All sharps (medical needles and syringes) must be placed in a sealed rigid container (sharps container, milk jug, coffee can).  The container must be placed in a clear secured plastic bag such as a Ziploc plastic storage bag.

  • Non-medical liquids, household chemical waste, and medical appliances and hardware WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED as they are NOT part of this collection program

  • Please note we can not accept pharmaceuticals or sharps that are not properly packaged as described above.

  • When dropping off acceptable items, please have a State of Illinois identification (drivers license or State ID card) indicating you are a Wheeling resident.  This program is limited to Wheeling residents only.

Upcoming SWANCC Recycling Events

HOUSEHOLD ELECTRONICS RECYCLING EVENT

The Motorola Foundation and SWANCC will co-sponsor their 10th Annual Household Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Motorola’s Schaumburg facility at 1301 E. Algonquin Road (enter Visitor’s Entrance A) to ensure that end-of-life products are recycled and do not end up in landfills. Materials collected at the event will be processed at the Lombard, Ill., facility of Supply-Chain Services, Inc. (SSI), a leading electronics recycler, which holds four stringent industry certifications for environmental management and data security.

Items that will be accepted include:

    · Computers and peripherals -- PC’s, printers, monitors, tape
      drives, keyboards

    · Personal home office equipment and products -- telephones,
      answering machines, typewriters, pagers, mobile phones

    · Entertainment and visual equipment -- televisions,
      videocassette recorders, stereo equipment, cameras, video
      game players

    · Home improvement products such as power tools

Items not accepted include large home appliances, air conditioners, de-humidifiers and microwave ovens. This event focuses on residential-generated electronics only. Businesses, school districts and governmental institutions can visit www.swancc.org for recycling resources.

One-Day Household Chemical Waste collection events are sponsored by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) each spring and autumn at NO CHARGE to Illinois residents.

Document Destruction Events

Document Destruction Events for 2008 are listed below.  You can sign up for SWANCC's  Elist and be reminded by email of this event and other SWANCC special collection events.

The events will run from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and there is no cost to attend. Paper clips and staples do not need to be removed, but please remove binders. Also, please have your ID ready, as SWANCC Staff will be checking each vehicle. Workers will help take paper out of vehicles and place in toters. The documents will then be loaded into a shredding truck on site. The paper will be cross-shredded, baled, and recycled.

Recyclable materials should be placed in your recycling cart (the one with a yellow lid) at the curb on your regular collection day.  Materials do not need to be segregated within the cart. Recycling carts will be provided by Waste Management for use beginning June 1, 2004. 

General Guidelines:

  • Do not mix household refuse with recyclables in your recycling cart.  Mixed refuse will not be collected.
  • All recyclable materials should be rinsed free of food with caps or lids removed.

  • Cardboard must be flattened into 2 foot by 2 foot squares.  Place cardboard inside or next to the recycling cart.

All acceptable recyclable items should be placed together inside your recycling cart for collection. Materials that can be recycled include:

  • aluminum cans, foil, and formed containers

  • steel or tin cans

  • empty aerosol cans

  • glass bottles and jars only; brown, green or clear glass

  • newspapers, magazines and catalogs, telephone directories, kraft brown paper bags, paperboard
    junk mail, mixed paper
  • plastics – includes #1 PET (1 and 2 liter soda bottles, plastic plates and trays), #2 HDPE (laundry detergent containers, milk and water bottles, margarine tubs, baby wipe containers, plastic cups), #3 PVC (cooking oil bottles, shampoo bottles, liquor bottles), #4 LDPE (squeeze mustard bottles, shampoo bottles) and #5 PP (deli containers, cosmetic containers, six and twelve pack plastic rings.

The following materials are NOT ACCEPTED as recyclables:

  • motor oil, anti-freeze, pool chemicals, or hazardous waste containers
  • mirrors, window glass, Pyrex dishes, and light bulbs
  • containers larger than 1 gallon
  • scrap metal
  • food or contaminated paper
