Utility (Water and Sewer) Division

This Division is comprised of two previously separate Water and Sewer Divisions with a combined twenty-one (21) full-time employees (one (1) Utility Superintendent, two (2) Field Supervisors, three (3) Certified Water Operators and fifteen (15) Maintenance Operators).

The Division maintains, operates, and repairs the Village's sanitary/storm sewer collector and conveyance system and water distribution system.

Click here for the detailed utility infrastructure facts and responsibilities.

Water Distribution

The Village has received treated Lake Michigan water from the City of Evanston through the Northwest Water Commission since 1985. Treated Lake Michigan water is distributed through the Village's water distribution system.

The water distribution system includes all activities, maintenance, service and repairs associated with the transmission of above Lake Michigan water through the distribution system to all of its customers in sufficient quantities and quality to meet the demands of its users and required fire protection flows.

If Residents experience a low water pressure or smell unusual odor, please contact the Public Works Department at (847) 229-4600. Utility personnel will contact you to check your concerns.

Sanitary Sewer

Sanitary sewer operation and maintenance encompasses all activities and procedures to effectively manage, maintain, operate and repair the Village's sanitary sewer network so that an uninterrupted and reliable waste water collection, conveyance and disposal system is maintained.

The Village's system is operated as a local collector system within the area served by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) which provides regulatory control and guidelines on the amount and type of acceptable raw waste discharges that can be deposited into their interceptor lines for conveyance to regional treatment facilities.

If residents experience a sewer back-up, call the Public Works Department at (847) 229-4600. Village crews will inspect the sanitary sewer main. If there is a problem in the Village's sanitary sewer main, the Village will repair the sewer main. If there is a problem in the private sewer service line, the Village will inform the property owner who will then have to hire a plumber to repair the private sewer service line. If a 6" clean-out is provided after the repair, the Village could televise the private sewer line to check if the sewer service line is properly repaired, and/or where blockages are located.

Storm Sewer

Storm sewer system collects and conveys storm water to Buffalo Creek/McDonald Creek/the William Rogers Memorial Diversion Channel and eventually to the Des Plaines River. Division personnel perform periodic maintenance to keep storm sewer system in good operating condition. During periods of heavy and/or prolonged rainfall, crews are assigned to clean debris from storm sewer inlets and monitor & maintain all creek flows and levels.
