Child Passenger Safety Seat Inspections

Did you know that Motor Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 8 years? According to Safe Kids (www.safekids.org), correct use of child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. Unfortunately, many child safety seats are not used properly. Often times the mistakes made when installing a child restraint are simple things that can be easily corrected. The Wheeling Police Department has nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians that can help you make those corrections so your child is transported safely while traveling in your vehicle. Please contact our Child Passenger Safety Hotline at 847-459-2950 to make an appointment to have your child safety seat inspected. This service is provided free to residents of Wheeling.

When you come in for your scheduled child safety seat check, please make sure the child restraint is installed. Also, make sure you have the child restraint instructions that come with the seat and your vehicle owner’s manual.

Did you know:

     · Illinois law requires that children be restrained in a child safety seat up until the age of 8 years.

     · The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children be kept rear facing until 2 years of age or the rear facing
weight/height limit of the child restraint.

     · Booster seats are great for older kids and there are many booster seats that will accommodate children up to 100 pounds.

     · Children should not graduate to using only the vehicle seat belt until they are at least 8 years old, 4’9” tall and weigh at least
      80 pounds.

     · Children should ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years of age.

     · Set a good example by buckling up every time. When kids see parents buckling up they will too.
