Services > Human ServicesSocial Services DivisionSocial Services in the Village of Wheeling is a coordinated effort
with all departments working together including the Wheeling Police and
Fire Departments as well as staff from the Community Development and
Public Works Department, and the Senior Services Division.
The Social Services Division provides basic needs including public
benefits, community resources, and financial assistance. Other services
provided are: How Can We Help?The Social Services Division is available by phone or by appointment at the office at the Wheeling Food Pantry on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, or by email at humanservices@wheelingil.gov. Social workers are available for consultation for all residents of the Village of Wheeling. Assessments and Referrals and Crisis InterventionVillage of Wheeling residents are provided with access to information in many areas such as housing, legal services, financial assistance, transportation, care giving resources, support organizations health care, immigration, vital records and utility assistance. Case ManagementOur social workers provide service to Wheeling residents by coordinating programs offered by the department and/or other social service agencies. When appropriate, social workers will advocate for services. Community Outreach and Needs AssessmentSocial workers provide social services at off site locations, at
community disasters, and at critical incidents. They also schedule home
visits to isolated or infirmed residents to provide them with all the
services available through the Human Service Department.

Crime Victim Court AdvocacyThe program is committed to providing free and confidential services to survivors of violent crime, including information, opportunities, advocacy, and support, especially in the civil and criminal justice system processes. We aspire to empower and assist survivors of crime in their recovery. On behalf of victims, we act as liaisons between victims and a variety of justice system departments and personnel. We advocate for victims' needs and wishes within the system and help victims determine which courses of action are best for them. We recognize the impact crime has had on victims, and support the important role victims play in criminal justice processes. We work to ensure victims are treated fairly and respectfully and provide services that lessen the impact of the crime and restore victims' losses. Crisis InterventionResponse to crisis situations involving violent attack, death, sexual assault, and /or emotional trauma. Services are provided on-scene when engaged by Police or EMS and provided to all Wheeling residents and those involved in crisis in the Village of Wheeling. Program and EventsCheck back for new programs as they become available periodically. Psycho-educational GroupsThe Human Services Department, from time to time throughout the year, will hold education seminars and groups with the focus on community needs. These programs strive to education the Wheeling community on important topics facing the community. Short Term Crisis CounselingOur social workers provide crisis intervention and short term counseling in an attempt to help residents understand issues which affect their lives. The social workers within the Human Services Department work closely with other professionals to provide the best services available. Local social service agencies, townships, schools, courts, physicians and community mental health centers are a part of the social services network. Counseling is of a confidential nature and confidentiality of client records is respected in accordance with the law.
