Cook County Tax Rate Increase
July 1, 2008
The
Village has been receiving a number of phone calls related to
the 1.0% increase in Cook County’s sales tax rate (effective
July 1, 2008). To clarify,
the
sales tax rate on general merchandise in the Cook County portion
of Wheeling is 10.0% and the rate on qualifying food and drugs
is 2.25% effective July 1, 2008. The
sales tax rate on general merchandise in the Lake County portion
of Wheeling is 8.0% and the rate on qualifying food and drugs is
1.75% effective April 1, 2008.
In addition, the tax rate on food
and beverages sold at restaurants that provide seating for
customers in the Cook County portion of Wheeling is 11.0% (e.g.
10.0% for sales tax and 1.0% for food & beverage tax) effective
July 1, 2008. In the Lake County portion of Wheeling, the total
tax rate on food sold at restaurants that provide seating for
their customers is 9.0% (e.g. 8.0% for sales tax and 1.0% for
food & beverage tax) effective April 1, 2008.
