Transportation Overview
Today, as in Wheeling's origin, transportation and
accessibility continue as one of the Village's most important
assets. Interstate 294 is the eastern boundary of
the Village with nearby interchanges at Lake-Cook and Palatine
Roads. I-294 allows easy access to O'Hare International
Airport (7 miles), Chicago's Loop (35 minutes), and to the rest
of the Interstate System. Just two miles west of Wheeling
via Lake-Cook and Dundee (Illinois 68) Roads, Illinois 53
(limited access highway) also leads to the Interstate System.
North-South Routes U.S. 45 and Illinois 83 also
offer easy access to other Chicago Metro Communities.
Commuter Rail transportation is available to Wheeling
residents, employees and visitors via the Metra North Central
Line boarded at the
Wheeling Metra Station. The North
Central Line has regular service to and from Chicago's Union
Station, O'Hare Airport (via bus transfer), as well as to
suburban communities to the north. Wheeling to Chicago's
Union Station on Metra's North Central Line is a 45-minute
commute. Congress has recently recommended federal funding
for improvements to the North Central Line that would allow for
an increase in the number of scheduled commuter trains on the
Line. This schedule increase in necessary to accommodate
the growing commuter travel population in Wheeling and the north
suburbs, as well as the growing Chicago population working in
the north suburbs.
Public transportation within the Village and to nearby
communities in northern Cook and southern Lake County is
provided by Pace bus lines.
