Calea Accreditation LogoThe Wheeling Police Department is recognized as an internationally accredited agency by the  Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). As a medium size police agency, the Wheeling Police Department is committed to solving problems and creating solutions through active participation within the community.

It is never too early or too late to start a career in law enforcement (as long as you meet the age requirements). One of the few automatic disqualifiers for a position of a police officer are: Indecent Solicitation of a Child, Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Prostitution, Keeping a Place of Prostitution, Pimping, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Sexual Abuse, Theft, Deceptive Practices, Impersonating a Police Officer or Veteran, Keeping a Gambling Place, Offering a Bribe, Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer, Escape, Aiding Escape, Harassment of Jurors or Families of Jurors, Manufacture or Delivery of Cannabis, and Delivery of Cannabis on School Grounds.

When pursuing a career as a Wheeling Police Officer, it is important to avoid alcohol and drug abuse, juvenile crimes, and maintain a clean employment history. For those over 18, professionalism at work, responsible financial management, and a good grasp of English are essential factors to consider and control.

Prepare for the physical demands of a law enforcement career by staying physically fit. Exercise regularly with activities like running, pushups, and sit-ups. Research specific fitness requirements for your gender, age, and weight for the physical agility test. Dedication and discipline are essential for success in law enforcement.

To prepare for a law enforcement career, go on a "ride-along" with local officers to experience their daily duties and ask job-related questions. This firsthand exposure helps you determine if a career in law enforcement is the right fit for you.

Getting a law enforcement job involves various tests and exams, background checks, and interviews. Candidates also undergo a police academy training program with strict adherence to rules and regulations.

Considering a 4-Year Degree?-not necessary but....

  • Is pursuing a Criminal Justice (CJ) major the right choice? Think about the time, money, and years invested in obtaining the degree.
  • What if a career in law enforcement isn't your path? What if unexpected circumstances like injury or retirement arise? How will CJ degree benefit you?  Would opting for a business degree have been more advantageous? Look beyond just the job aspect.
  • Keep in mind: Police Departments mandating a 4 year degree do not specify a particular major.
